From my Point of View in South Africa

Emma Nicholson has adapted Berkoff's short story From My Point Of View for the Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre in Greyville, South Africa.  The actors are Clare Mortimer and Darren King.  It is on from 4-9 Sept 2007.

A review says  "The stark stage is shared by Clare Mortimer and Darren King, who both put in strong performances in this brief and blunt 50- minute piece.  Mortimer is fantastic as a woman searching for someone to come home to. This promiscuous character trawls the left-overs at dance halls and dark hallways and yet still remains loveable through her honest narration.  Throughout the show we watch as she is man-handled and treated as an object; even when she first appears on stage she is carried on as a doll-like figure and dressed in the appropriate female paraphernalia. Yet there is something poignant about her openness and optimism in a world that is so deceptively desolate...

From My Point of View is a well- constructed show that is effective in its uncluttered appeal... There are only a few props which transform between the different scenes, and the uncomplicated appeal of it all allows for the eloquence of the writing to be showcased....  After all, it is Berkoff's writing that deserves centre stage, being both beautiful and explosive and worth the weight of each word." The Fall of the House of Usher in London

    click for link

The Fall of the House of Usher will be performed in a church crypt by Virtual Theatre Company.  The actors are Biff Harrison (Roderick Usher), Kate Loughran (Madeline Usher) and Tim Hinchcliffe (Edgar).  The director is John Drewry.  It is at St Andrew's Church, Holborn, London from 17-20 Apr 2007 at 18:00 and 20:00.

The director and actors use the crypt well and create the right atmosphere.  The extended mime of Berkoff has been tailored down, but this means the poetry of the words comes out more.  Kate Loughran's silent bewilderment and panic at the simplest of questions is sublime. Good performances by all three cast members.

Click on the link for more details of the venue (though it doesn't mention the performances).  To book phone 08707 554 555. Recommended.
