"…Iain Sinclair's performance in Steven Berkoff's one-act play, Harry's Christmas makes a visit a must. Sinclair's Harry is a tour de force, switching from bold confrontation with his mirror image to a quivering relic of fear and loneliness. This is a performance of sheer pathos, wrapped in desperate hope, set against the cruel backdrop of a desolate Christmas".  Peter Wilkins, Canberra Times.

Rosebud - The Lives of Orson Welles

click for link

Not written or directed by Berkoff, but he gives support to the production.  Written by Mark Jenkins, directed by Josh Richards and starring Christian McKay.

"2005 is the 20th anniversary of the death and 90th anniversary of the birth of Orson Welles... ROSEBUD - THE LIVES OF ORSON WELLES explores the life and times of this legendary figure, a giant of 20th century cinema. Welles’ achievements are well known: the infamous VOODOO MACBETH in Harlem whose premiere caused public celebration; the ‘live newscast’ radio adaptation of WAR OF THE WORLDS which had New Yorkers fleeing their city in terrified droves; the timeless, brooding classic, CITIZEN KANE - the greatest movie ever made. But these career-defining triumphs all belong to his youth. They assured his iconic status in America - helped by his marriage to Rita Hayworth - but were followed by decades of struggle. Exiled from Hollywood, his ambitions continually thwarted by powerful enemies, he spent the rest of his life battling to find (and fund) outlets for his creative genius. Was he the author of his own misfortune? He was a man of myriad talents - magician, word-conjuror, actor, director, producer. He emerges as a man of obstinate integrity. And if at times, desperate to raise finance for a project, he found himself waxing lyrical about frozen peas - well, what the hell. "

It is on at the Kings Head Theatre, London  from 20 Dec 2005- 21 Jan 2006.  Click on the image for details.
