"I'm probably one of the last writers who delivers hand-written manuscripts to his publisher.  I keep a doodle pad and scratch out ideas or scribble stage directions in pencil before I commit them to ink.  I chase out individual words which eventually grow into sentences.  A play takes nine months and three drafts before it's finished" (Sunday Times, 17 July 1988)
