A constant stream of visual imagination, LisztOmania is
the most unconventional and unique of Ken Russell's output. With Liszt
Russell finds the freedom for full unhinged expression. It must take the
cake as the most peculiar biography ever made about a classical composer.
Russell's film depicts Liszt as the first classical pop star, complete with
fanatical pubescent fans and groupies. The movie darts in and out of music
and film references, historic fact and allegory-all presented in a
hyberbolic comic strip fashion. Yes it's often tasteless and crude but
that's all a part of the fun.
The DVD includes a commentary. Region 2.
Ten directors were each assigned to create a short film
based around opera music. The directors were Robert Altman, Derek
Jarman, Jean-Luc Godard, Julien Temple, Charles Sturridge, Bruce Beresford,
Bill Bryden, Franc Roddam with Nicolas Roeg and of course Ken Russell.
Ken's pays hommage to Metropolis. The DVD is a special edition and
includes a documentary featuring interviews with producers and directors and
a commentary by Producer Don Boyd.
