Harold Pinter was born in Hackney, London on 10 October 1930. Pinter has one son, Daniel who changed his surname and became estranged from his father.
Pinter was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in 2001 (Must you go? Chapter 16). While the cancer initially went away, until his death Pinter was plagued with a number of illness, and his weaknesses also resulted in a number of falls.

"I came to view politicians and political structures and political activities with something I can best describe as detached contempt. To engage in politics seemed to me futile" (A conversation between Pinter and Nicholas Hern, 1985 in introduction to the Methuen One For the Road). Harold's efforts in the world of international protest concentrated on three main areas. First, there was Latin and South America, with a special interest in Nicaragua. Then there was Eastern Europe and the fate of the dissidents, with a special interest in Czechoslovakia. Lastly there was Turkey. See
